Blessed by almost constant surf on its southern and western coasts, thanks to the swell-producing machine that is the Great Southern Ocean, New Zealand doesn't lack quality waves. Low water tempertaures and harsh winters ensure the South Island's collection of world-class reef and beach breaks are seldom crowded - which is just how the locals like it. The North Island also boasts a solid selection of reefs, points and sand breaks. However, its warmer water makes it a more comfortable place to surf at all times of the year.
In tropical cyclone season (December - April) New Zealand's picturesque east coast receives a few large perfect groundswells from intense storms that spin away into the Pacific Ocean. These swells are infrequent, but not to be missed. At other times of the year, the North Island's East Coast is fickle, with long periods without decent swell.
The following images are from some of my favourite New Zealand surf spots. No exact locations are given; just general regions - for reasons of secrecy that all surfers will appreciate.
